A few more times, for a few more people: I can’t believe this is happening to us

By JEFFREY LEMON, Associated Press WriterWashington (AP) A few weeks ago, the city of Indianapolis offered up a new name for a place it says was once the epicenter of a wave of crime: “The City That Killed Them All.”
The announcement was part of an effort to keep residents of the historic center safe after the city saw a surge in violence during the Black Lives Matter movement.
That effort had led to the resignation of Mayor Joe Hogsett and a recall election for Mayor Ritchie Reyes.
Now the mayor’s successor, Republican James Thompson, has announced the naming of a new citywide police chief, a new police chief’s position and the formation of a task force on crime.
Thompson said Friday he had met with city officials and they assured him the city would be a safe place for citizens and residents to live.
“The task force will work with the City of Indianapolis to develop a plan that can make Indianapolis a better place for everyone,” Thompson said.
The city of more than 1.4 million people was once known as “The Black Hills” or “The Castle.”
The name is a combination of the names of two former Confederate generals who had been sent to the state to help fight the Confederacy.
The city has an official motto: “To the South for the South.”
A decade ago, there were about 10 murders a day.
It has since fallen to about two a day and is now averaging about five a day, according to police data.
The number of homicides this year has been more than double the average over the past 10 years, according the police department.
Some of the crime victims have been identified but police have not released names or details about the victims, including the date and time of the killing.
The victims were found in various parts of the city.
Some said the names were intended to be a wake-up call.
“It’s just a shame.
It’s just sad,” said Robert Smith, who works at a fast food restaurant.
“They didn’t know the history.
I didn’t think that we would have to be dealing with it.
I think it’s sad that it’s happening to people.”
The Indianapolis city council is set to meet Monday and decide on the names for the new police director, the new city police chief and the task force.
In November, the chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Michael Bowers, resigned after being caught on tape discussing how to deal with gang members in a meeting with city leaders.
Bowers was the chief from 2001 to 2007, when he was named interim chief in December 2014.
He left to become a prosecutor in the city and was a police commissioner before his firing.
A group of residents have been organizing to get the names changed, including a coalition called Black Lives Matters.
It is calling for the names to be changed from “TheBlackHills” to “TheBlueHills.”
It is also calling for an investigation into the murders.
The Black Lives Movement was a nationwide protest movement in the 1970s led by civil rights activist and activist Black Panthers that sought greater social equality.
It was also the name given to the southern suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, where the Birmingham Police Department was formed in the 1960s to serve as the federal police force for the region.
The names of several prominent Black Lives organizations have been altered or replaced.
The Black Panthers, founded by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., became the Black Panthers in 1964.
They became the New Black Panthers after King’s assassination.
