AUSTRALIA’s top climate scientist says the current state of science is a “terrible mess” that needs to be improved.
Key points:Scientists warn of a severe heatwave, heavy rainfall and heavy rainfall flooding over the next few days as the Australian Capital Territory struggles to adapt to climate changeExperts say Australia is in a “very bad place” to meet its climate change goalsDr John Abraham, the former chief scientist of the Bureau of Meteorology, said the current science was a “shameful failure” for the country and a sign of the country’s poor preparation to tackle climate change.
“It’s a very bad situation,” Dr Abraham told the ABC.
“We’re in a very poor place right now, and it’s very, very hard to get us back to where we need to be.”
Dr Abraham said the country was in a state of emergency due to extreme weather conditions.
“The weather in Australia today is unprecedented in terms of intensity and duration of heatwaves and heavy rains,” he said.
“And we’re in this state of a crisis.”
Dr Abram said the situation was “not sustainable”.
“We’ve got to be careful because if we don’t get to a point where we have a better understanding of what’s happening, and we have the appropriate data to look at and do a better job of assessing the risks and impacts, then we could be back to a situation where we’re going to have a worse situation than what we are now.”
